TRANSCRIPT: ‘We welcome vulnerable children’ into America’s ‘care & protection’

EDITORS' NOTE: The following is excerpted from President Bush's comments in signing the Partial-birth Abortion Ban Act Nov. 5. WASHINGTON (BP)--In passing this legislation, members of the House and Senate made a studied decision based upon compelling evidence. The best case against partial-birth abortion is a simple description of what happens and to whom it happens. It involves the partial delivery of a live boy or girl, and a sudden, violent end of that life. Our nation owes its children a different and better welcome. The bill I am about to sign protecting innocent new life from this practice reflects the compassion and humanity of America.

The full text of President Bush's Feb. 4 address during the memorial service for the seven astronauts killed aboard Columbia follows. The service was held at Houston's Johnson Space Center.

HOUSTON (BP)--Their mission was almost complete, and we lost them so close to home. The men and women of the Columbia had journeyed more than 6 million miles and were minutes away from arrival and reunion.
The loss was sudden and terrible, and for their families, the grief is heavy. Our nation shares in your sorrow and in your pride. And today we remember not only one moment of tragedy, but seven lives of great purpose and achievement.

EDITORS' NOTE: Following are excerpts from a transcript of remarks by President Bush Feb. 12 on his National Drug Control Strategy. A story about the president's initiative appeared in Baptist Press Feb. 13.
WASHINGTON (BP)--This nation has got some big challenges ahead of her. One big challenge, of course, is to defend freedom, is to remain united as we fight for the very values that we hold so dear.

TRANSCRIPT: Bush, at Sept. 11’s 3-month point: ‘Every death extinguished a world’

WASHINGTON (BP)--A great writer has said that the struggle of humanity against tyranny is the struggle of memory against forgetting. When we fight terror, we fight tyranny; and so we remember. We remember the perfect blueness of the sky that Tuesday morning. We remember the children traveling without their mothers when their planes were hijacked.

TRANSCRIPT: ‘In all that lies before us, may God grant us wisdom’

WASHINGTON (BP)--Mr. Speaker, Mr. President Pro Tempore, members of Congress and fellow Americans.

TRANSCRIPT: ‘I’ve never had more faith in America than I have right now’

WASHINGTON (BP)--Today, millions of Americans mourned and prayed, and tomorrow we go back to work. Today, people from all walks of life gave thanks for the heroes; they mourn the dead; they ask for God's good graces on the families who mourn; and tomorrow the good people of America go back to their shops, their fields, American factories, and go back to work.
