Chick-fil-A announces new approach to charitable giving

NASHVILLE (BP) -- On Monday (Nov. 18), the popular U.S. fast food chain, Chick-fil-A, Inc., announced a new policy concerning its charitable giving. According to an online statement, the policy, which will take effect in 2020, will focus the company's charitable donations on the areas of hunger, homelessness and education. In 2019, the Chick-fil-A Foundation, the company's philanthropic arm, donated to upwards of 300 charitable organizations. Under the new policy, the foundation will distribute $9 million dollars in pledged donations next year and will limit its partnerships to only one charity for each of its three initiatives.

NASHVILLE (BP) -- A tweet from an executive with the Houston Rockets has touched off an international controversy and brought attention to an ongoing dispute between Hong Kong and China. On Friday, Oct. 4, Daryl Morey, general manager of the Texas-based NBA franchise, posted an image on Twitter with the words: "Fight For Freedom. Stand With Hong Kong." In response, multiple Chinese organizations including the Chinese Basketball Association, the Rockets' Chinese sponsors, and Tencent, a Chinese conglomerate that holds the NBA's rights in China, announced they would end all commercial partnerships with the NBA team. To quell the controversy, Morey later deleted the post and apologized, and the NBA released a statement clarifying Morey's views did "not represent the Rockets or the NBA."

NEW YORK (BP) -- On Monday (Sept. 23), at the "Global Call to Protect Religious Freedom" event at the United Nations headquarters in New York, President Trump delivered an address urging world leaders and members of the international community to join the fight to end religious persecution and protect religious freedom across the globe. According to Pew Research Center, both government restrictions on religious freedom and social hostilities toward religion have been on the rise around the world since 2007. Standing before U.N. Secretary General António Guterres and a room full of foreign leaders, Trump offered an impassioned plea for governments across the world to make a concerted effort to end religious persecution.
