Puerto Rican evacuees aided by Fla. Baptists

ORLANDO, Fla. (BP) -- More than 200,000 hurricane survivors from Puerto Rico have trekked to Florida for refuge, with several Baptist churches in central Florida at the forefront of ministering to their needs. "The Florida Baptist Convention is excited to partner with the churches in the central Florida region as they respond to the needs of the Puerto Rican community moving into the area," said Tommy Green, the convention's executive director. Another 100,000 Puerto Ricans are projected to arrive in Florida in the coming months as a result of catastrophic damage from Hurricanes Maria and Irma last September across the U.S. territory.

Halloween opportunity for churches’ evangelism

MIAMI (BP) -- While retail stores across the nation are selling Halloween costumes and all kinds of sweets, many Southern Baptist churches are getting ready to offer their communities a safe and fun alternative. At AVANCE, Hispanics hear Ronnie Floyd, David Platt

COLUMBUS, Ohio (BP) -- In a night marked by worship, fellowship and workshops, Hispanic Southern Baptist pastors and leaders from across the United States came together for AVANCE 2015 prior to the Southern Baptist Convention's annual meeting. The June 14 gathering began at 5 p.m. with worship led by Julio Arriola from Cross Church in northwest Arkansas, followed by a dinner and featured speaker SBC President Ronnie Floyd. David Platt, president of the International Mission Board, also addressed the group. After the dinner, the IMB, the North American Mission Board and LifeWay Christian Resources hosted workshops. The evening concluded with an informational session from the new Hispanic Leadership Network.

Fla. church shooting suspect arrested

BRADENTON, Fla. (BP) -- A suspect has been arrested in the shooting deaths of a Florida pastor, a church staff member and one other person. Andres "Andy" Avalos, a suspect in the murders of Pastor Tripp Battle of Bayshore Baptist Church in Bradenton, Fla., and two women, was arrested Saturday (Dec. 6) by Manatee County Sheriff's deputies at a mobile home park about two blocks from the church, the Bradenton Herald reported.
