Baptist relief teams practice for preparedness

ALPHARETTA, Ga. (BP) -- When a major disaster strikes in North America, Southern Baptist Disaster Relief responds to provide help, healing and hope to survivors of the disaster. But what happens when there isn’t a major disaster? Occasionally, SBDR engages in a disaster simulation. SBDR’s most recent exercise occurred May 19 when SBDR staff and volunteer leaders simulated a hurricane hitting Charleston, S.C.

Collegians recruit peers for GenSend missions

ALPHARETTA, Ga. (BP) -- Abby Hughes is one of two campus mobilizers in the Northwest taking on the responsibility to find other college students to venture to New York City for 10 weeks this summer. "I have been working alongside my church as well as reaching out to pastors around the Northwest to connect with students who could potentially take part in GenSend," Hughes said of the Generation Send initiative of the North American Mission Board.

Ice storm crisis draws Baptist relief efforts

ALPHARETTA, Ga. (BP) -- Roads froze, trees fell, and thousands of homes and businesses lost power as record-breaking, freezing temperatures swept through the southeast this week. Lynchburg, Va., dropped to 11 below zero Friday morning, setting an all-time record low. Lynchburg was joined in the record book by places like Louisville, Ky., Evansville, Ind., Ashville, N.C., and many others.

Appalachian students receive 30,000 school backpacks

ALPHARETTA, Ga. (BP) -- Weeks after the holidays, backpacks filled with school supplies given by Southern Baptist churches continue to bless students in Appalachia. Teams from Appalachian Regional Ministry (ARM) traveled all along the East Coast in December to deliver Christmas backpacks to 30,461 students in all grade levels. After receiving a backpack, the students had the opportunity to listen to a Gospel presentation, resulting in 701 salvation decisions.

Collegiates embrace evangelism challenge

ALPHARETTA, Ga. (BP) -- College students across the United States were joined by believers of all ages as they participated in Engage24, a one-on-one evangelism initiative that challenged Christians to share the Gospel with at least one person in a 24-hour time period. NEW ORLEANS (BP) -- Victor is one of thousands of people left homeless and hungry after Hurricane Katrina stormed through New Orleans in 2005. The trauma drove Victor to become significantly dependent on alcohol. He began to seek help from a feeding ministry at Gentilly Lowe's, a neighborhood in Louisiana that was severely damaged by Katrina.
