Replica of Noah’s Ark opens to public

WILLIAMSTOWN, Ky. (BP) -- Thousands of supporters and media descended on the rural town of Williamstown, Ky., earlier this week for the ribbon cutting of a life-sized replica of Noah's Ark. The Ark Encounter theme park opens to the public today (July 7). "If it floods again, will it float?" a reporter shouted out during a July 5 press conference as dark clouds rolled across the sky over the property off I-75. "I've had many people in the media ask me if it will float, and my answer is this: read the Bible," responded Ken Ham, president of Answers in Genesis, the ministry that built the ark. His response brought cheers from the crowd.

No regrets as pastor leaves statehouse seat

FRANKFORT, Ky. (BP) -- For more than three decades, Baptist pastor Tom Riner has been fighting for Christian causes in the Kentucky legislature without regard for party politics. The socially conservative Democrat will wrap up his 34-year statehouse career in January after losing a bid for re-election May 17 to former Louisville Metro Council member Attica Scott.

Church ‘fills in the gaps’ for people dealing with hunger

SHELBYVILLE, Ky. (BP) -- As she serves up oatmeal and sausage casserole, Susie Stivers sings an old Gospel hymn in a strong voice. It's a bright Thursday morning; light streams in through the storefront windows of Victory Baptist Church in Shelbyville, Ky. This is not your typical Southern Baptist Church. There are no stained glass windows, no baptismal, no steeple.

Ky. governor’s stance stymies Planned Parenthood

FRANKFORT, Ky. (BP) -- Planned Parenthood stopped performing abortions at a Louisville clinic after Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin objected to violations of state law. The organization had begun offering abortions during the week of Jan. 18 but when that news was made public on Thursday, Jan. 28, Bevin reacted harshly. "They are openly and knowingly operating an unlicensed abortion facility in clear violation of the law," the governor said in a statement. "We will use the full force of the commonwealth to ...

David Williams finds new calling after Senate career

BURKESVILLE, Ky. (BP) -- A crowd of men in orange pants and white T-shirts gathered around as David Williams handed bags filled with simple gifts through the metal bars of a southern Kentucky jail. "All of us have done some things we are not proud of," he told them during a Christmas Day visit to the facility. "And your sin is no worse than mine."

Ky. statehouse chaplain to pray & provide counsel

FRANKFORT, Ky. (BP) -- When the Kentucky General Assembly directory was printed, it probably wasn't intended as a prayer guide. But that is how Steve Weaver has been using the publication. For weeks, Weaver has been studying the faces of Kentucky's politicians to know them by name -- and to pray for them as a minister to the state capitol.

Completion of Ark theme park expected July 2016

WILLIAMSTOWN, Ky. -- Modern-day construction crews will finish in about a year what it took Noah a century to do: build an ark. Work on the life-sized replica of Noah's Ark is expected to be completed and opened for visitors on July 7, 2016. The infrastructure of the mammoth boat rises above a rural swath of rolling farmland in Williamstown, Ky., about a half hour south of ...
