"We are handing out the Word of God, through churches, and we are seeing numbers upon numbers of people believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Only God could do that."

ACP: Worship attendance rises, baptisms decline

NASHVILLE (BP) -- The Southern Baptist Convention expanded by more than 270 churches in 2017. More people showed up for weekly worship services, and congregations gave more generously in a strengthening economy. However, reported baptisms and membership declined as fewer churches participated in the SBC's Annual Church Profile (ACP). Longstanding patterns continued to dominate the ACP, which is compiled by LifeWay Christian Resources in cooperation with Baptist state conventions.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (BP) -- Dawn Rush was horrified when her teenage daughter, Ashley, started drawing in her Bible. "She was writing all over the Word of God!" said Rush, who attends New Vision Baptist Church in Murfreesboro. "She kept asking me to paint in her Bible. That gave me panic attacks." But treating Scripture as a canvas wasn't a sign of disrespect, Rush discovered. Instead, it helped Ashley connect with God as she overcame severe depression.
