Adoption, foster care ‘messy’ but biblical, panel says

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BP) -- Adoption and foster care and what local churches can do to help families navigate related challenges were among the topics discussed by a panel of Southern Baptists in Birmingham, Ala. The panel was one of many that tackled a variety of topics on the Cooperative Program stage in the exhibit hall of the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex June 10-12. The CP panels were held in conjunction with the Southern Baptist Convention's annual meeting.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BP) -- Panelists discussed a range of topics on the Cooperative Program panel stage during Southern Baptist's annual meeting in Birmingham, Ala. Among those topics were the future of the Southern Baptist Convention, resourcing churches to confront the sexual abuse crisis, and women in ministry. Moderating the "Vision SBC" discussion on June 10 in the exhibit hall were Jonathan Howe and Amy Whitfield, podcast co-hosts of "SBC This Week." Panelists were: Ronnie Floyd, president and CEO of the SBC Executive Committee; Paul Chitwood, president of the International Mission Board; and Kevin Ezell, president of the North American Mission Board.

WMU celebrates with 131 missions, learning activities

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BP) -- Nathan Bailey, 14, enjoyed the knot-tying the most, and his 12-year-old sister Naomi had fun learning the Hawaiian hula dance. The brother and sister from Winterville (Ga.) First Baptist Church were among the more than 750 people at the Woman's Missionary Union headquarters Monday, June 10. There, they decided among more than 131 mission and learning activities, which correlated with WMU's 131st anniversary.

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (BP)--The destruction and heartache from a series of tornadoes that hit several Tennessee counties and claimed 12 lives April 7 sent Tennessee Baptist disaster relief teams into immediate action.
      David Acres, Tennessee Baptists’ disaster relief director, said teams are continuing to help victims of the storms.
      Local Baptist associations as well as the state convention responded with feeding, cleanup and chain saw teams and with laundry and shower units, Acres told the Baptist and Reflector, newsjournal of the Tennessee Baptist Convention.

(BP)--A six-month evaluation of a five-state Baptist convention response to needs in Nicaragua stemming from Hurricane Mitch has resulted in more than 235 houses being built, five new churches and 600-plus recorded professions of faith, reported Tim Bearden, leader of the Tennessee Baptist Convention's missions awareness and involvement group.
