Pastors jailed in Sudan as gov’t muscles church control
OMDURMAN, Sudan (BP) -- Police arrested and interrogated seven Christian church leaders in Omdurman, Sudan Aug. 23 for refusing to turn over leadership of their church to the government, sources said. The Sudanese Church of Christ (SCOC) leaders were interrogated for six hours and released on bail, charged with refusing to comply with an order to turn over leadership of their congregation to a committee appointed by Sudan's Ministry of Guidance and Religious Endowments.
25 church buildings in Sudan feared to be demolished
JUBA, South Sudan (BP) -- State officials in Sudan plan to demolish at least 25 church buildings in the Khartoum area, according to Christian leaders. A letter from the Executive Corporation for the Protection of Government Lands, Environment, Roads and Demolition of Irregularities of Khartoum State reveals the names and locations of 25 church buildings marked for demolition, most of them in the Sharq al Neel (East Nile area) locality of Khartoum North. The government reportedly claimed the churches were built on land zoned for other uses, but Christian leaders said it is part of wider crack-down on Christianity.
Christian pastor freed in Sudan, others still charged
KHARTOUM, Sudan (BP) -- A court in Khartoum, Sudan, released a pastor from prison Jan. 2 after acquitting him of charges punishable by the death penalty, sources said. Sudan releases church leader held since Dec.
JUBA, South Sudan (BP) -- Sudan has released one of two church leaders jailed since December, sources said, leaving another pastor incarcerated without charges. Telahoon Nogose Kassa, head of discipleship at the embattled Khartoum Bahri Evangelical Church, was released May 10 after Sudan's National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) arrested him without charges Dec. 13, 2015, according to church members.

JUBA, South Sudan (BP) -- Sudanese authorities have released one of two pastors detained without charges since December 2015, Morning Star News reported Jan. 31. Kwa Shamaal, head of missions for the Sudanese Church of Christ (SCOC), was arrested Dec. 18 and released Dec. 21, but had been required to report daily to the office of the National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS), where he was held from 8 a.m. until midnight, sources said. That requirement was removed Jan. 16.
