NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)–A marriage instruction book by Tom and Jeannie Elliff and one that encourages parents who homeschool their children are among 10 books released by Broadman & Holman Publishers in February and March. B&H is the trade publishing division of LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention.
Nonfiction
— “Letters to Lovers: Wisdom for Every Season of Your Marriage” by Tom and Jeannie Elliff is a book of love letters written by the couple for each other and their children. The letters cover such subjects as parenting, unconditional love, finances, trusting God and loving one’s in-laws. Elliff, pastor of the Oklahoma City-area First Southern Baptist Church of Del City, is chairman of the SBC Council on Family Life.
— “The Spiritual Power of a Mother: Encouragement for the Home Schooling Mom” by Michael Farris includes letters written to Farris from mothers needing encouragement regarding homeschooling issues. Farris is president of the Home School Legal Defense Association, and he and his wife teach their 10 children from home. The book includes Farris’ answers to the letters and other articles he has written about homeschooling.
— “Men of Character” and “Women of Character” by Lawrence Kimbrough, a Broadman & Holman editor, highlight men and women in the Bible whose strength, sacrifice, dignity and determination make them extraordinary role models. The two books, which offer 90 daily devotional readings, are a part of the One Minute Bible Series.
— “Recreation and Sports Ministry” by John Garner, church recreation and sports specialist for LifeWay, is a manual to guide church recreation ministers in using sports as a ministry tool.
— “Making a New Vow: A Christian’s Guide to Remarrying After Divorce” by J. Warren Kniskern offers biblical advice for people who are remarrying after a divorce. Chapters deal with guilt, forgiveness, finances, children, ex-spouses and biblical teachings on remarriage.
— “Charles Colson: A Biography” by John Perry is the authorized biography of Colson’s life and conversion and holds him up as dramatic proof that no one is beyond God’s power to save.
Children’s books
— “Awesome God” and “I’ve Just Seen Jesus” are two new books in The Dove Award Signature Series for Children written by Grammy-nominated record producer Stephen Elkins and illustrated by Ellie Colton. The books feature songs that have won the Dove Awards from the Gospel Music Association. The books include individual stories and a CD with a children’s choir singing the featured songs.
— “Bible Town Detectives: Featuring Inspector Dee” by Mary Rose Pearson allows children, acting as detectives, to learn the Bible by moving through the ranks of Inspector Dee’s detective force by obtaining badges, stars and certificates for solving puzzles and riddles, filling in the blanks, learning Bible verses and participating in other activities.

— “Holman Christian Standard Bible UltraTrim New Testament with Psalms and Proverbs” is available in narrow-trim size with black or burgundy bonded leather binding and paperback. The checkbook-sized New Testament fits easily into a coat, purse, pocket, backpack, glove compartment or briefcase. Broadman & Holman Publishers is developing the new translation, which is expected to release in its complete form in spring 2004.
— “Varsity Colors Journals” inspired by the popular Varsity Colors Bible line are bonded leather journals available in purple, orange, crimson, red or blue. The journals can be used for sermon notes, Bible study insights or prayer journaling. Each journal contains lines of Scripture and plenty of room for personal reflections.
