3 workers from Baptist conference center missing

PASS CHRISTIAN, Miss. (BP)—Three staff members are unaccounted for from the Gulfshore Baptist Assembly on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Efforts are being made to locate the three staff members who were in the conference center when Hurricane Katrina’s unexpected storm surge hit Aug. 29, William Perkins, editor of the Mississippi Baptist Convention’s newsjournal, The Baptist Record, confirmed.

The conference center is a total loss.

“Our hope and prayer is that they did get out,” Perkins told Baptist Press Sept. 2.

The three missing individuals were not being identified at press time.

The Mississippi convention’s Gulfshore facility, located between Biloxi, Miss., and New Orleans, was destroyed by Hurricane Camille in 1969 and rebuilt to withstand hurricane-force winds. But Katrina’s 20-plus-foot storm surge, as evidenced across the Gulf Coast, was another matter altogether.
