8-year-old girl’s theology stirs pastor to thinking

WESTWEGO, La. (BP)–At first, pastor Wayne VanHorn corrected an 8-year-old girl when she said, “I just know Jesus wants me to come into his life.”

“But she had it right, and I had it wrong,” said VanHorn, of First Baptist Church, Columbia, Miss., who led three Bible studies during the Nov. 12-13 annual meeting of the Louisiana Baptist Convention in Westwego.

“When we invite Jesus into our lives, we’re so busy that we can only give him a scrap of time of Sunday, maybe Sunday night and the faithful few on Wednesday night,” VanHorn reflected.

“Jesus doesn’t want to come into your life that way,” the pastor continued. “He wants you to come into his life. He is the resurrection and the life. He is the way, the truth and the life. He is your way, your truth, your life, and he invites you to come into his life.”

The Christian faith, VanHorn noted, is “all about using this Word [the Bible] to get us to the ultimate word [Jesus], so we can be a living word, so lost people can come to Jesus.”
