9-year-old Baptist girl wins state competition with song about God

AUBURN, Wash. (BP)–With an original composition that speaks of faith and God’s love, nine-year-old Northwest Baptist Brooke Reed won first place in a recent state-wide competition.

She was awarded first place in her division for her interpretation of the theme Anything is Possible in the annual Washington State PTA “Reflections” program.

“God gave me the song,” Reed said. “He let me think of the words and then helped me put music to them.” Reed, who became a Christian four years ago, composed the lyrics on a family outing as she focused on what is possible with God’s love.

She is the daughter of Greg and Melinda Reed. Melinda Reed is worship leader at Celebration Community Church, in Auburn.

Her entry was one of more than 24,000 submitted at the local level. There the song placed second in her division. It was one of 1,100 that advanced to the state level where it placed first in her division.

“We’ve seen God’s will in her life progressively unfold,” said Melinda Reed, Brooke’s mother. “For her to win at this level is very rewarding and a reminder that God works in people of all ages.”

This was her fourth year to enter the competition. She placed second last year in the primary division.

“This is the first time we have had someone achieving this level,” said Linda Cowen, Superintendent of Schools in Auburn. “We are incredibly proud and inspired by the challenge in Brooke’s song.”

Reflections is a National PTA and Washington State PTA cultural arts competition. Its purpose is to provide an opportunity for students to use their creative talents by expressing themselves through their own original works.

“Getting the award makes me feel like God is working in my life,” Reed said. “I want to write more Christian songs so those who don’t know Christ might come to know him.”

Reed entered the program at Hazelwood Elementary School, where she is a third grader.

“The Hazelwood community is very proud of Brooke for the beautiful song she composed,” said Hazelwood Principal Linda Scarvie. “Anything is Possible is the perfect statement for Brooke and her family.”
