CORDOVA, Tenn. (BP)–Former Southern Baptist Convention President Adrian Rogers is expected to have a full recovery from triple bypass surgery March 16, according to an announcement on the website of Bellevue Baptist Church in suburban Memphis, Tenn.
Rogers, pastor of the church since 1972, was advised to undergo the surgery after a routine examination March 15. The surgery took place the next morning.
“No heart damage has occurred, and Dr. Rogers did not experience a heart attack or other symptoms,” the church announcement stated. “The surgery was successfully performed, and doctors said that the surgery could not have gone better. A full recovery is expected.”
The church added, “Please continue to pray for him as he recuperates from the surgery and looks forward to being back in the pulpit in a few weeks.”
Rogers was elected president of the SBC in 1979 and twice again during the 1980s. He also is the featured speaker on the “Love Worth Finding” radio and television ministry aired across the United States and in 150 other countries, and he is the author of numerous books on the Christian life.
