MEMPHIS, Tenn. (BP)-Adrian Rogers, a former president of the Southern Baptist Convention, is concluding tests today (June 15) at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston to confirm a diagnosis of colon cancer that had spread onto his liver.

Rogers, 73, who retired earlier this year as pastor of Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova, Tenn., entered the facility on Monday, June 13, and is scheduled to return to his Memphis-area home on Thursday, June 16.

“This is not a doomsday report,” Bill Skelton, executive vice president of Rogers’ Love Worth Finding radio and TV ministry, told Baptist Press. Skelton said Rogers is scheduled to preach at Bellevue’s two Father’s Day worship services on Sunday morning, June 19, and at the Southern Baptist Pastors’ Conference June 20.

Surgeons removed part of Rogers’ colon May 16 after cancerous polyps were found in a routine colonoscopy. Subsequent tests revealed that the cancer had spread onto his liver, which Skelton differentiated from liver cancer.

In addition to confirming the diagnosis, physicians at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center will prescribe a chemotherapy treatment plan, Skelton said.
