[1]LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (BP)–Charlie Warren was elected editor of the Arkansas Baptist Newsmagazine in a Sept. 2 called meeting of the journal’s board of directors.
Warren, director of public relations at Oklahoma Baptist University, succeeds Trennis Henderson, who left the Arkansas editorship to become editor of the Western Recorder, the newsjournal of the Kentucky Baptist Convention. Henderson had served Arkansas Baptists for six years.
“The Arkansas Baptist Newsmagazine has a solid reputation for fairness, balance and journalistic quality,” said Warren, who assumes the editor’s post Oct. 2. “I am excited to be joining such a team. I pledge to do my best to maintain that reputation and help tell the story of how God is at work among Arkansas Baptists.
“I am eager to get to know Arkansas Baptists at the grassroots level. I intend to spend much of my first year visiting with convention leadership, associational leadership and pastors, staff and laypeople from every area of the state,” Warren said. “With God’s help, the assistance of a great staff and the support of Arkansas Baptists, we will attempt to produce the best Baptist news publication to be found anywhere.”
“We were looking for a man who was a fellow Christian and felt a call to the ministry, as well as one who had a journalistic education and experience in Christian journalism,” said Erby Burgess, chairman of the newsmagazine’s editor search committee. During the search process, “Charlie Warren continued to rise to the top of the list.”
ABN board President Ken Shaddox said Warren’s vast degree of experience in Christian journalism will be a great asset to Arkansas Baptists. “Sharing how God is at work among the people and churches in our state is a tremendous privilege and responsibility. As editor, I believe Warren will bring with him a commitment to sharing the truth with balance and fairness.”
Before assuming the OBU post three years ago, Warren had served more than eight years as editor of HomeLife magazine, the family magazine produced by LifeWay Christian Resources in Nashville, Tenn. Earlier he was associate editor of the Baptist and Reflector, the newsjournal of the Tennessee Baptist Convention, for four years. He also has worked in editorial positions at the former Baptist Brotherhood Commission, the Southern Baptist International Mission Board and the Baptist General Convention of Texas.
A native of Roanoke, Va., Warren earned his A.A. degree from Bluefield (Va.) College, his B.A. degree from Oklahoma Baptist University, Shawnee, and his M.R.E. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas.
Warren and his wife Sandy, have two grown sons, Todd and Brad, and a 15-year-old daughter, Jan.
