Baptist communicator awards presented April 1 in Chicago

CHICAGO (BP)–Winners were announced April 1 in the Baptist Communicators Association’s annual Wilmer C. Fields Awards Competition, spanning 75 categories.

The awards, selected from 497 entries submitted by 125 BCA members, were presented in connection with the association’s annual meeting in Chicago.

The top awards presented in the competition’s six divisions were:

— Arthur S. Davenport Award for exceptional achievement in public relations: Florida Baptist Convention public relations division, for “Maguire State Mission Offering/Partners in the Harvest.” Don Hepburn is the division’s director.

— M.E. Dodd Award for exceptional achievement in electronic media: FamilyNet, of the Southern Baptist North American Mission Board’s broadcast communications group, for “Valor,” a video about Medal of Honor recipients broadcast on local ABC affiliates last fall.

— M.E. Dodd Award for exceptional achievement in website: Paul Huse, Missouri Baptist College, for “MBC Website.”

— Frank Burkhalter Award for exceptional achievement in news writing: the staff of the Baptist Standard, Texas, for coverage of the shootings at Wedgwood Baptist Church last September and Tamara Heitz-Peek, Southwest Baptist University, for “Don’t Cry, Jesus Loves You.”

— Leonard Holloway Award for exceptional achievement in feature writing: Greg Warner, Associated Baptist Press, for “The Power of Teams” and Bob Allen, ABP, for “Second Georgia Baptist Church Faces Ouster Over Ministry to Gays.”

— Fon H. Scofield Award for exceptional achievement in publication photography: Roy M. Burroughs, International Mission Board, for “Brazil: Heart of Darkness.”

Albert McClellan Award for exceptional achievement in print media and design: FamilyNet Radio, NAMB, for “Life’s Common Thread.”
