NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)–The editors of eight Baptist newspapers have announced plans to host a dinner honoring the student editors of colleges and universities attending the 2001 Baptist Press National Student Journalism Conference, Sept. 27-29 in Nashville, Tenn.

“The state papers who are serving as co-hosts are happy to participate in this inaugural event sponsored by Baptist Press,” said Lonnie Wilkey, editor of the Tennessee Baptist Convention’s Baptist and Reflector and coordinator of the dinner. “We are excited about the prospect of meeting college students who have expressed an interest in journalism.”

The dinner is sponsored by the editors of the Baptist and Reflector; Baptist Standard, Texas; Christian Index, Georgia; Baptist Messenger, Oklahoma; Biblical Recorder, North Carolina; Baptist Courier, South Carolina; Arkansas Baptist Newsmagazine; and the Florida Baptist Witness.

The dinner is open to Baptist college or university student newspaper editors and their advisers.

“We hope to be able to share our love for Christian journalism with them and be able to answer any questions they may have about the possibility of Christian journalism as a vocation,” Wilkey said.

Will Hall, vice president for news services with the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee and executive editor of Baptist Press, said he was delighted see the state paper editors host the event.
