Baseball loses one of its good guys as Rico Brogna announces retirement

ATLANTA (BP)–The retirement announcements of Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken created all kinds of hoopla in the media, and rightfully so, BPSports columnist Tim Ellsworth writes. Gwynn and Ripken are two future Hall of Famers, and their absence on the field after such remarkable careers is a big story.

But when Rico Brogna announced his retirement recently, it barely got a mention on Sportscenter.

That’s not too surprising, as most people probably don’t even know who Brogna is, Ellsworth notes. For the most part, Brogna was a marginal player. But the first baseman was truly one of baseball’s good guys, and he’ll be missed.
