Belmont basketball shocks Valparaiso at the buzzer

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)–Adam Sonn scored the final two points of his game-high 24 points on a pair of free throws with just 34 seconds left to secure the Belmont Bruins (1-1) their first-ever victory over Valparaiso (0-2) by a score 74-72 on Monday night.

The first half proved to be 20 minutes of runs. Belmont ran out to an amazing 13-0 lead over the Crusaders as Sonn scored eight points during the 4:48 run. Valpo bounced back with an 11-3 run of their own to get the game back to single digits.

The Bruins immediately responded with a 9-0 run to grab their largest lead of the night at 14 points on a three-pointer from Wes Burtner. The Crusaders came back again with an 11-0 spurt highlighted by five points from Lubos Barton. A lay-up from Sonn gave the Bruins a six-point cushion, 35-29, heading into the intermission.
