Bible Study: Feb. 3, 2019

[1]

NASHVILLE (BP) — This weekly Bible study appears in Baptist Press in a partnership with LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. Through its Leadership and Adult Publishing team, LifeWay publishes Sunday School curricula and additional resources for all age groups.

This week’s Bible study is adapted from the YOU curriculum.

Bible Passages: 2 Peter 1:19-21, 1 Corinthians 2:10-14, Romans 8:26-27

Discussion Questions:
— Who has inspired you to do something? Why?
— How do you make decisions about the future?
— Where do you see the Holy Spirit working in the world today?

Food for Thought:

Lawyers offering their services are as common these days as hot days in summer. It wasn’t always that way.

[2]

Once upon a time, attorneys could not publicly advertise their firms. It was considered unethical. Now, law firms spend nearly a billion dollars a year on ads. And here’s why — people need help. Today’s lesson helps us see how a different kind of “helper” leads and guides our lives. The Holy Spirit isn’t a lawyer, but He does actively work on behalf of believers, moving us closer to becoming what God created us to be.

For many the Holy Spirit is a mystery. While we might agree that He is completely God and the third member of the Trinity, we don’t always understand what He does or how He moves. One great way to get a better understanding of the Holy Spirit’s identity is to understand the Holy Spirit’s role. We learn who He is by looking at what He does.

Today’s Scripture passages make it clear that the Holy Spirit is 1) the Inspirer of God’s Word, 2) the Interpreter of God’s will, and 3) the Interceder for God’s people.

The Holy Spirit is a powerful Helper. The Spirit not only can meet our needs; He really wants to meet those needs! That’s exciting, and it should motivate us to learn more about Him and to trust Him.

The Holy Spirit loves you and wants to help you become more like the person God designed you to be. Don’t be afraid to embrace the Spirit as a powerful Helper, and to thank the Father for allowing Him to work in your life.
