Bible Passage: John 2:1-11

Discussion Questions:

Food for Thought:

When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. That’s the phrase people say when things go wrong in life. We try to make the best of the situation. We try to take life into our own hands. And as Christians, sometimes we forget that God is there to help us, even in the tiny details of our lives. We must remember that Jesus cares for us, in every possible way.

We see this especially in Jesus’ first miracle, recorded in John 2:1-11. Jesus was at a wedding with His mother and His disciples. And unfortunately, the wedding ran out of wine. Mary told Jesus of this, and He told her His time had not yet come. Jesus, however, told the servants to fill the water jars meant for purification. And when they did and served it to the headwaiter, it had become the best tasting wine of the night. As a result, Jesus “revealed His glory, and His disciples believed in Him” (John 2:11).

Jesus’ first miracle was at a wedding, turning water into wine. It wasn’t making a blind man see or healing a demon-possessed person. He would do that later. But His first miracle was helping a newlywed couple enjoy their wedding. That’s the Jesus we trust and worship. He cares about the details of our everyday lives, even something so seemingly trivial or worldly as a fun celebration, a wedding. He wants to help us when things go wrong. He wants us to call on Him for that help.

Seeing that Jesus cares about our everyday life –  that He knows is temporal – how much more does He care about our spiritual life that is eternal. In changing water into wine, His glory was revealed in how He can do the miraculous and how He can transform anything, even humanity. Through His work on the cross, He makes us new and transforms our lives, saving us from sin and death. Jesus’ power over creation in changing water into wine revealed His divine glory, and He is our only hope for salvation.

The Gospel Project

The Gospel Project is a chronological, Christ-centered study for kids, students and adults. The Bible is not a collection of stories. It is one story of God’s plan to rescue His people from sin and death. It is the story of redemption, the gospel message of Jesus Christ.
