NASHVILLE (BP) — This weekly Bible study appears in Baptist Press in a partnership with Lifeway Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. Through its Leadership and Adult Publishing team, Lifeway publishes Sunday School curricula and additional resources for all age groups.
This week’s Bible study is adapted from The Gospel Project curriculum.
Bible Passages: Deuteronomy 18; Mark 1; John 6, 14
Discussion Questions:
- What are some things believers can do to live in submission to Jesus’ authority over their lives?
- If Jesus is the only way, what are some important distinctions between Christianity and other religions?
- How will you take Jesus’ words of life to those around you?
Food for Thought:
When Jesus began His earthly ministry, He immediately turned heads. He taught with authority in a way that completely stunned and amazed the people who heard Him. No one had ever seen or heard anyone teach the way Jesus taught. He was recognized as a prophet, perhaps even the Prophet foretold by God to Moses in Deuteronomy 18:18-20.
But Jesus wasn’t accepted by everyone. Many people immediately desired to follow Him, but lacked staying power because His teachings were very difficult to understand and accept. Jesus, the true Prophet, not only declared the way to the Father, but revealed Himself as the only way.
Many have claimed to know the way to heaven. But any way that doesn’t begin and end with the person and work of Jesus is wrong. God sent His Son Jesus both to speak the message of eternal life and to do the work necessary for us to receive eternal life.
There is no other way to receive eternal life but through faith in Jesus, Who alone has provided justification for sinners. Continued and sustained belief in Jesus is the only way to truly know and understand God’s goodness and grace.
As the Prophet whom God foretold, Jesus has the words of eternal life. How we respond to Him, whether with faith and obedience or rejection and rebellion, will reveal our standing with God.
The Gospel Project is a chronological, Christ-centered study for kids, students and adults. The Bible is not a collection of stories. It is one story of God’s plan to rescue His people from sin and death. It is the story of redemption, the gospel message of Jesus Christ. More information can be found at Lifeway.com/gospelproject.
