Bible Study: March 13, 2016

NASHVILLE (BP) — This weekly Bible study appears in Baptist Press in a partnership with LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. Through its Leadership and Adult Publishing team, LifeWay publishes Sunday School curricula and additional resources for all age groups.

This week’s Bible study is adapted from the Bible Studies For Life curriculum.

Bible passage: John 8:12-19

Discussion questions: When do you remember feeling afraid of the dark? Where do you see evidence of darkness in today’s world? What do these verses teach us about Jesus’ nature and character? What are some reasons people give today for rejecting God’s Word as truth? What decisions must we make in order to follow Jesus’ judgments and directions?

Food for thought: Do you remember what it’s like to be afraid of the dark?

It happens to everybody at one point or another. You’re standing alone in extreme darkness; there’s no source of light anywhere close. You have some place you want to go, but the darkness makes you move slowly, cautiously. Then you feel it — a warning sensation in the back of your brain. You know it doesn’t make any logical sense, but it feels like there’s someone behind you, or some thing behind you. Your heart starts beating a little faster. You fight the urge to whirl around, because you know that will only stoke the panic and make things worse. But you can’t help walking a little faster. Then a little faster still. You want nothing more than to escape from this moment and feel safe once more.

Now, imagine what a relief it would be to run into someone you know in a moment like that — someone you trust. Better still, imagine what a relief it would be if that person turned on the lights.

As we’ll see in John 8, Jesus is always with us, no matter how dark life may seem. And He does more than turn on the light when we’re afraid. Jesus Himself is the Light of the world.
