Bible Study: You in church, Christ in you

NASHVILLE (BP) – This weekly Bible study appears in Baptist Press in a partnership with Lifeway Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. Through its Leadership and Adult Publishing team, Lifeway publishes Sunday School curricula and additional resources for all age groups.

This week’s Bible study is adapted from the MasterWork curriculum.

Bible Passages: Colossians 1:28

Discussion Questions:

  • How are you daily letting God speak to you to conform you to the image of His Son?
  • What evidence are you seeing of Godʼs activity in and around you?
  • How are you joyfully and faithfully functioning in the church where God has placed you?

Food for thought:

God’s goal for us is Christlikeness. You can anticipate God’s persistent and faithful activity in your life and church causing you to act, talk, love and think like Christ(Ephesians 4:13). Paul assured the Colossians that God’s eternal purpose for every believer, and the corporate life of believers, is “Christ in you.” Paul said his goal, therefore, was that “we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus” (Colossians 1:28).

Because the fullness of Christ has been placed in the church, each member has access to all that God has to offer. God’s plan to redeem a lost world is through the corporate life of His people. God saves people and then places them in the body of His Son, Jesus Christ. God places all His fullness in His Son.

Do not underestimate the capability your church has to bring your life to Christlikeness. The elderly woman at the prayer meeting may forever enrich your prayer life. That faithful deacon may change the way you handle your commitments to the Lord. That youth who boldly shares his faith at high school will challenge you to be a stronger witness. The widow who continues to give sacrificially to the Lord’s work may encourage you to become a better steward.

I have known people who neglected the times of corporate church life, wanting only to relate to the pastor. I would always challenge them that the pastor alone could not bring them to Christlikeness. It is important that you be closely linked with a church body. Without those dear people, there will be much of Christ that you may not experience.
