[1] BLUEFIELD, Va. (BP)–Daniel G. MacMillan has been named president of Bluefield College.
MacMillan, director of community relations for Palm Beach Atlantic College, West Palm Beach, Fla., will become ninth president of the 75-year-old Bluefield College, one of four with ties to the Baptist General Association of Virginia.
“I am excited about the opportunity to serve here at Bluefield College,” MacMillan said after the school’s trustee announcement April 19. “I believe in the purpose and the mission of this college and want to help strengthen that vision. This is just one more chapter in the life of this college, and it is extremely important that we build on what began here 75 years ago.”
After a search process that lasted more than six months and involved more than 50 applicants, the board approved a unanimous recommendation from the presidential search committee to elect MacMillan. He will begin his tenure July 1.
MacMillan succeeds Roy Doybns, who retired as president in 1996 after a seven-year tenure.
At Palm Beach Atlantic, MacMillan coordinated and supervised community programs and conference services. Before his tenure as director of community relations, MacMillan served three years as vice president for planning, research and assessment. In that position he coordinated the school’s institutional effectiveness program, headed the college’s institutional research and worked in the preparation of accreditation documents.
During his 14-year career with Palm Beach Atlantic, he also served 10 years as vice president for student development, planning and implementing student programming, services and activities, including residence life, athletics, health services, campus ministries and student discipline.
Prior to his service at Palm Beach Atlantic, MacMillan worked as director and professor of church recreation for Samford University, Birmingham, Ala. He also served as minister of recreation for Briarlake Baptist Church, Decatur, Ga., and Calvary Baptist Church, Tuscaloosa, Ala.
MacMillan earned a doctorate in education and recreation from the University of Alabama in 1975. He received a master’s degree in health, physical education and recreation from Tennessee Technological University in 1972 and a bachelor’s degree from Carson-Newman College in Tennessee 1967. He and his wife, Sandy, have two children, Ashley and Matthew.
