Bob & Eleanor Terry injured in South Africa auto accident

DURBAN, South Africa (BP)–Bob Terry, editor of The Alabama Baptist, and his wife, Eleanor, were seriously injured in an auto accident July 11 while in Durban, South Africa, attending the Baptist World Alliance General Council’s July 5-11 meeting.
The Terrys are in serious but stable condition at St. Augustine Hospital in Durban. They were riding in a taxi just three blocks from their hotel when an oncoming car ran a red light and slammed into their cab, reported Dennis Jones, International Mission Board missionary in Durban. Jones said both Terry and his wife were thrown from the car.
Several bones in Eleanor Terry’s face were broken, including her jaw and skull bone between her eyes. She had surgery to set the fractures and is expected to have reconstructive surgery at the end of the week of July 13. Bob Terry had surgery for a fractured nose and other facial injuries.
“They’re pretty banged up, but they are doing fine,” Jones reported July 12.
The Terrys’ children, Brent Terry of Atlanta and Jean Cullen of Vincent, Ala., went to South Africa early in the week after their mother “took a turn for the worse,” Brent reported July 13. “She is in a confused and agitated state and has been taken off medication temporarily. We don’t really know any details.”
Eleanor had told her son Sunday they were “miserable, but that’s part of the healing.” The Terrys are not expected back in the United States until the end of July at the earliest.
Jones said anyone wishing to send an e-mail message to Bob and Eleanor Terry can do so through his address: [email protected].
