SALT LAKE CITY (BP)–Members of the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee elected one new vice president and reassigned another during their June 8 pre-convention meeting.
D. August “Augie” Boto of Austin, Texas, was elected vice president of convention policy/staff counsel. Boto, an attorney and layman at Hyde Park Baptist Church, fills a staff opening created by the recent retirement of Ernest E. Mosley, executive vice president. Among Boto’s responsibilities will be managing the process of review and change in the policy documents of the SBC, its Executive Committee, boards, commission and seminaries, including the SBC constitution, bylaws, business and financial plan and SBC entity constitutions, bylaws and charters.
Boto, a member of the Executive Committee prior to his election, was unanimously recommended for the post in March by Executive Committee officers. The position was approved retroactive to June 15.
David E. Hankins, formerly vice president of convention policy, was reassigned as vice president of Cooperative Program. Among his duties will be directing the ministry of SBC Cooperative Program promotion.
“We’re excited about the team God has put together,” Morris H. Chapman, SBC Executive Committee president and chief executive officer, said.
Committee members also declined to act on a referral from the 1996 SBC annual meeting that the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (then the Christian Life Commission) establish a system by which to vote by proxy all investments held by Southern Baptist institutions.
Committee member Hollie Miller of Knoxville, Tenn., explained that while voting by proxy technically can be done, it is not feasible.
