Details of Brutal Beating & Torture of Blind Legal Activist Chen Guangcheng Emerge

LINYI, Shandong, China (ChinaAid)–ChinaAid has learned the details of a brutal four-hour beating by local authorities of blind legal activist Chen Guangcheng and his wife, about whom there has been no reliable news for months.

The July beating, which was witnessed by the couple’s elementary school-age son, is but one episode in a pattern of horrific persecution against Chen because he had exposed the violent and deadly measures used by Chinese authorities to enforce the nation’s one-child policy. The couple endured a similarly brutal beating in February after they had smuggled out a videotape documenting the shocking conditions of their illegal house arrest following Chen’s release from prison. (See the ChinaAid report at www.chinaaid.org/2011/06/detained-blind-activist-chen-guangcheng.html.)

A reliable source told ChinaAid that the July beating occurred after a storm knocked out equipment that authorities had installed in Chen’s house to cut off all their telecommunications contact with the outside world. With the equipment disabled, Chen was able to make phone calls on July 25, but the calls were intercepted by authorities. On July 28, Shuanghou town mayor Zhang Jian led a group of people to Chen’s home and beat and tortured the couple for four hours.

[2]

This is the sequence of events:

* 2 p.m. — authorities clear out everyone from Chen’s village

* 3 p.m. — authorities conduct an exhaustive search of Chen’s home and find a phone card in a pile of ashes

* 4 p.m. — authorities start the beating. Chen’s screams of pain were heard first, while his wife Yuan Weijing was heard shouting angrily and their son Kesi cried. After a while, Weijing’s screams of pain could also be heard. From then until 8 p.m., the only sounds were screams of pain.

Some time later, a village doctor was permitted to give Chen some cursory medical treatment.

During the four-hour beating, Chen’s elderly mother, who lives with them, was prevented from entering their home. When she was finally allowed to go in, neighbors heard her burst into tears, and her anguished cries — described as “gut-wrenching to hear” — continued for a long time.

According to the source, Zhang tortured Chen to try to get him to tell how he got the phone card to make the calls on July 25 and to reveal where he had hidden it. When Chen and his wife refused to give any details, their house was ransacked until the phone card was found in a pile of ashes.

Then the mayor’s men viciously beat up Chen and his wife in the presence of their son Kesi. “As family men themselves with parents and children, how could they inflict such inhuman pain on a little boy?” the source asked.

ChinaAid’s founder and president Bob Fu said, “We condemn the Shandong authorities for their extreme brutality against innocent blind Chinese legal activist Chen Guangcheng and his wife.”

“The Chinese government’s brutality against brave individuals like Mr. Chen who promote the rule of law should certainly make the world seriously doubt the sincerity of the Chinese government’s commitment to international human rights,” Fu said.

Chen was imprisoned for four years and three months for exposing the violent measures used to enforce China’s one-child policy, including forced abortions and involuntary sterilizations that in his county alone in 2005 numbered 130,000.

Since his release from prison in Sept. 2010, Chen has been kept under illegal house arrest, denied medical treatment for serious intestinal problems and deprived of all contact with the outside world. Reporters and activists who have tried to visit him have been roughed up and turned away.

As a result, there has been no reliable information about Chen and his family for months, although there have been unconfirmed reports this fall that Chen might have been killed by Chinese authorities.

On July 21, the House Foreign Affairs Committee unanimously passed an amendment to the State Department 2012 appropriation bill supporting Chen and his wife. (See ChinaAid’s report: www.chinaaid.org/2011/07/amendment-for-blind-activist-chen.html.)

The Lord’s Resistance Army: An Abomination in Africa
By Nina Shea
WASHINGTON, D.C. (Hudson Institute)–For the past quarter of a century, 50-year-old Ugandan madman Joseph Kony — who claims to have channeled the spirit of one of Idi Amin’s generals — has led the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), designated a terrorist organization under the Patriot Act. The LRA’s monstrous depredations have terrorized millions of people in Uganda, South Sudan, the Central African Republic, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It acts in pursuit of Kony’s maniacal aim to seize power and supposedly rule by the Ten Commandments, though his and his groups’ actions and beliefs are inimical to the Judeo-Christian moral code. He has particular difficulty with “Thou shall not kill.”

In 2010, Congress passed a bill with bipartisan support calling on the president to take action against the LRA. On October 14, Pres. Obama informed Congress he had begun deploying one hundred military advisers to the central African region to work with local security forces in the four affected countries with the stated goal of “removing from the battlefield” Kony and other senior leadership of the LRA. This measure is long over due and should be applauded.

Kony is no “Christian missionary,” as some media insist on describing him. His rituals include elements of Christianity, Islam, and black magic. He boasts that he cuts off the lips. ears, noses and breasts of those who refuse to acknowledge him as a divine leader. He also amputates the feet of those who ride bicycles, and punishes those who eat white feathered chickens.

He preys on civilian villages, which his army loots for provisions, and where they hack to death and shoot the adults, and abduct the children. One of his main strategies has been to cleanse the land of adults, whom he deems untrustworthy, and start a new society with children. Reportedly, more than 85 percent of LRA captives are children, most between the ages of 11 and 16. Young males are indoctrinated and trained for combat, and girls are used as sex slaves and beasts of burden for Kony and his commanders.

Estimates of the numbers of children abducted range between over 30,000, according to the UN, and 66,000 in Uganda alone, according to the Survey for War Affected Children. Millions of people have fled the LRA into refugee camps, which are also sometimes raided. Over two million Ugandans have had to flee their homes, in addition to the 400,000 currently displaced in the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, and the Central African Republic. UNICEF reported that over the years thousands of children became “night dwellers,” walking five miles or more each night to seek shelter in urban centers.

The deeply traumatized thousands of children who have escaped enslavement tell of witnessing, or even being forced to participate in, the clubbing to death of their mothers and fathers. Mothers who have been raped witness the bayoneting of their infants. The captives are forced to torture and kill other children caught trying to escape. Always on the move with the LRA leaders in the jungles and swamps of central Africa, they suffer repeated rape, beatings, and deprivation of every kind.

The LRA has reportedly caused as many as 200,000 deaths, most from disease and malnutrition but increasingly resulting from violent attacks on villagers. Human rights reports state that the LRA killed over 2,000 in the past year in such attacks. In the Haute Uele district of the DRC, 865 people were killed by the LRA from December 24, 2008 — when 50 Catholic villagers were killed at a Christmas Mass — to January 17, 2009.

The dynamic 46-year-old Catholic bishop Edward Hiiboro of Tambura-Yambio in South Sudan’s Western Equatoria state, along the lush Central African and Congolese borders, told me that his 31,000 square mile diocese would be a veritable “garden of Eden” but for the raids of the LRA. In 2009, he said, a large LRA gang stormed into Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in the town of Ezo, abducting 17 teens and young people. Shortly afterwards, one of them, a young man, was found dead after being tied to a tree and mutilated and 13 others remained missing a month later. A few days later, in the nearby town of Nzara, six people walking in a forest were ambushed and killed by being nailed to pieces of wood fastened to the ground, that is, crucified. Bishop Hiiboro organized a three day prayer vigil involving Christians of all denominations, in which 20,000 people walked two miles barefoot and in sackcloth and ashes in silent protest against the lack of protection provided them.

Ugandan and other of the region’s armies have sporadically and unsuccessfully tried to get Kony. Poorly trained and equipped, these armies have also faced the complication that LRA combatants are mostly children, who are also victims. In 2005, the International Criminal Court at The Hague issued arrest warrants for Kony and his top commanders for war crimes and crimes against humanity, including enslavement, sexual slavery, rape, murder, intentionally directing an attack against the civilian population, enlisting children and pillaging. However, the court has no enforcement power.

Though armed and at times protected by northern Sudan’s General Bashir, Kony would be no match for America’s highly trained security forces. A past US advisory effort initiated under the Bush administration failed; hopefully this one will be better prepared. Kony and his diabolical operation have been allowed to maraud for too long.

‘Visionary’ Florida Baptist Hispanic pastor dies
Memorial for Comesañas Oct. 30 in Miami
By Joni B. Hannigan

HIALEAH GARDENS, Fla. (Florida Baptist Witness)–Jorge Comesañas, 71, a leader in Hispanic work in Florida, and pastor of First Baptist Church Hialeah Gardens, died early Oct. 27. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor two years ago.

Comesañas, a native of Cuba, was the former pastor of First Spanish Church in Coral Park from 1982-2009, and led the church which grew from 150 to over 2,000 members during his tenure, to be a leader in Cooperative Program giving for all language churches in the state.

Frank Moreno, lead strategist for the church planting group for the Florida Baptist Convention, called Comesañas one of the “greatest Hispanic pastors” in the state, noting he built the largest Hispanic church in Florida and one of the largest in the nation.

“He was absolutely committed to missions,” Moreno said of Comesañas. “He had a heart not only for missions, but to reach out to the lost and to serve the community. We will really miss him, he was outstanding.”

Noting Comesañas was a mentor to young pastors, Moreno called him a “visionary” who was “in many ways ahead of his time.”

After retiring from the Coral Park church, Comesañas agreed to serve as interim pastor at Nuevo Amanecer, which merged with First Baptist Church of Hialeah Gardens where Comesañas continued to serve as pastor until his death.

A sought after visionary and teacher, Comesañas served on Florida Baptist State Convention’s State Board of Missions from 1995-2000.

In Cuba, Comesañas attended Seminario Bautista de Cuba Occidental and began a mission in Buenavista, Habana. He was ordained in 1963 and served four different churches whose pastors had been jailed by the Cuban government. Barred from emigrating with his family to the United States until 1968, he arrived in Florida where he became a missionary for the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention (now the North American Mission Board) and began serving from Naples to Sarasota.

Later he pastored churches in New Jersey and Georgia before returning to Florida to pastor a Spanish mission in Jacksonville in 1979, then moved to Miami in 1982 to pastor the Coral Park church.

In April the Florida Legislature approved a measure authorizing a request by the Miami Dade County Board of County Commissioners to name a street, SW 86th Avenue form SW 8th Street to SW 24th Street as “Rev. Jorge Comesañas Way.”

Comesañas is survived his wife of 47 years, Carmen; and adult children Alex, Daniel, David, and Amy; numerous grandchildren; and other family members.

A memorial service was held Oct. 30 at First Spanish Church in Coral Park.

Participants will be able to log on to the webcast through LifeWay Women’s Facebook page at http://bit.ly/James-Launch.

The party will introduce attendees to the New Testament’s book of James and Moore’s new study and will feature a special live segment with Moore and several thousand dollars in prize giveaways.

“LifeWay Women is excited to bring together women across the nation through this interactive, online platform to learn, discuss and experience the Book of James,” said Pam Case, director of LifeWay Women. “Beth Moore’s Bible studies have already enabled so many women to grow in their faith. ‘James: Mercy Triumphs’ provides yet another rich opportunity for women to connect to each other and the Savior, as well as challenge them to put their faith in action.”

Case described “James: Mercy Triumphs,” which releases November 1, as a study exploring how one glimpse of the resurrected Savior turned James, an unbeliever, into a disciple. The eight-session study helps women discover how to better incorporate faith into their daily life by getting to know both James and his New Testament book, she said.

“With this study, Beth Moore also provides a new, tiered approach that provides supplemental activities so women can decide how deeply they want to engage,” Case said.

Reading theological articles and memorizing the book of James are examples of suggested ways to pursue the topics more in-depth.

Case said participants are encouraged to visit the page ahead of time to preregister for the Facebook sweepstakes. Winners of the sweepstakes will be announced during the live webcast.

Giveaways include:

–An iPad

–Two $500 LifeWay gift cards

20+ Events Planned for 24th National Anti-Porn Week: White Ribbon Against Pornography (WRAP) Week Kicks Off October 30th

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Morality in Media)–Morality in Media (MIM) is launching its second Be Aware: PORN HARMS National Awareness Campaign Oct. 30 – Nov. 6 in conjunction with the 24th White Ribbon Against Pornography Week with more than 20 national events planned to help individuals understand and cope with harms of pornography.

“Pornography is bringing harm to all areas of society,” said Patrick Trueman, president of MIM. “It is destroying families and is the main contributor to the exploitation of women and children. Pornography is the gateway to the sex industry and the harm must end.”

Be Aware: PORN HARMS was first launched in July of 2011 with great success, reaching hundreds of thousands in 81 countries with more than 40 online events. This was the first time in recent years that groups representing many social perspectives collaborated to raise awareness about the issue, so MIM is using the campaign again.

“This year’s WRAP week campaign will include collaboration with ex-porn stars, a neurosurgeon, the LDS church, filtering companies, scholars, therapists, Internet safety experts, feminist leaders and many more,” said Dawn Hawkins, executive director at MIM. “We are even providing a Spanish language event and Spanish handouts this year.”

Morality in Media has been the national sponsor of WRAP since its creation in 1987. Many strong victories against pornography have been won with the encouragement of this effort. By incorporating Be Aware: PORN HARMS into this tradition, more victories are expected by increasing awareness of the harms from pornography.

“Throughout the week events will be accessible through our website, www.PornHarms.com/beaware,” Hawkins said. “We will be streaming documentaries about the links between porn and human trafficking, hosting discussions with past porn performers, providing education on understanding pornography addiction and offering steps to keep children safe. There will be something for everyone.”

A full list of events can be found at www.PornHarms.com/beaware or on Facebook, www.Facebook.com/pornharms.

About: Morality in Media, Inc. is the leading organization focused on opposing pornography and indecency through public education and the application of the law. MIM is leading The War on Illegal Pornography, a coalition of more than 100 national and state groups whose goal is to stop the distribution of illegal pornography. Pastor Shifts Ministry ‘For a Season’
Mark McSwain to draw on personal experience to help cancer patients
By Lonnie Wilkey, editor, Baptist & Reflector

BEMIS, Tenn. (Baptist & Reflector)–Over the past few years Mark McSwain experienced a lot of tough days as he battled cancer.

But Sunday, Oct. 2, may have been one of his toughest — in a different way.

McSwain had to announce to the congregation of First Baptist Church here, where he has served for the past 10 and a half years, that he was stepping down as pastor to begin a new ministry.

“This was the hardest thing I have ever done in my ministry,” McSwain observed.

“I love this church and they love me. They ministered to me through my cancer treatments.”

It was also difficult for McSwain because he firmly believes “pastoring a local church is the highest of all callings.”

And he is optimistic that one day he will return to the pastorate.

But beginning Nov. 1, “life as I have known it for 20 years will be vastly different, at least for a season,” McSwain said.

“I am not walking away from the ministry,” McSwain stressed.

“When I was called to preach 20 years ago, the only way I knew how to live that calling was to be a pastor,” he observed. “In the years since, I have learned there are other ways to live out that calling. I am still a pastor at heart.”

In November McSwain will officially launch his new ministry “Survivor2Survivor.”

The decision to begin a faith-based ministry geared toward newly diagnosed cancer patients did not just happen overnight.

It is a process that actually began in December of 2007 when he was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma (a rare form of cancer) at the age of 44. McSwain endured 16 chemotherapy treatments and 35 radiation treatments with nine different entry points on his neck.

As he underwent treatment, McSwain kept a detailed journal.

That journal would later form the basis for a recently published book, Through the Eyes of a Storm: Perspective Gained Through a Cancer Journey.

The driving force behind Survivor2Survivor is that “No one journeys alone,” McSwain said.

He learned that in a very personal way during his treatment and recovery. From his wife and family to his church family and a host of other people along the way, McSwain is the first to admit he did not travel alone during his battle with cancer.

In his book, McSwain related how one Fulton Mullis, a senior member of the church and a deacon, walked with his pastor during that time, even taking him to treatments when his wife could not go.

“He was there for me as a sign of hope,” McSwain said.

Hope is the message that McSwain wants to convey through his new ministry to newly diagnosed cancer patients.

He noted that the vision statement for Suvivor2Survivor provides that hope through people who have been through cancer.

“Providing a network of trained and compassionate survivors who will be ‘Journey Partners’ for newly diagnosed cancer patients offering support by one who has been there,” the statement says.

The primary purpose of the ministry, McSwain stressed, is “to insure no one goes through cancer diagnosis and treatment alone.”

Other purposes includes being a resource for patients, listeners, encouragers and advocates for cancer research and treatment.

McSwain is hopeful that his book will serve as a resource and an instrument of hope. He purposely kept the book short (only 55 pages). “I wanted people to go from despair to hope in only one sitting,” McSwain said.

He recalled that when he was undergoing treatment there was no way he could have read a lengthy book.

His ultimate goal for the book is to put a copy into hands of newly diagnosed patients at no cost. Several people have already purchased quantities of the book to be used for that purpose, he said, noting that 500 books were sold in the first four weeks since it was published.

His goal for the ministry is to build a network of cancer survivors (Journey Partners), not only in the Jackson area, but across the state and eventually the nation.

“No matter who calls, regardless of the form of cancer, I want to find someone who has had a similar diagnosis and treatment,” McSwain said.

“We want someone to work with newly diagnosed patients to give them an idea of what they can expect. I want these Journey Partners to be a source of hope for that patient,” he continued.

He noted that Journey Partners will be linked with newly diagnosed patients based on similar diagnoses, similar treatments, gender and geographical region.

Building the ministry and finding Journey Partners and providing funds for the ministry is what prompted McSwain to shift gears from the pastorate, at least “for a season.”

From personal experience, McSwain knows that Journey Partners may also have the opportunity to share the source of hope that can be found only through Jesus Christ. “This is a way we can share the gospel,” he said.

McSwain, who has shared his testimony and vision for the ministry in churches already, knew he could “not keep up the pace” of the ministry while continuing to serve as pastor of FBC, Bemis.

He hopes to have opportunities to preach and to spread the word about his new ministry.

Kenny Carr, pastor of Long Heights Baptist Church in Mc-Kenzie, noted that his church “was greatly encouraged and blessed recently through the ministry of Mark McSwain. His testimony of what God has and is doing in his life through the journey of cancer he has been on was powerfully relevant not only to those who are cancer survivors but to those in the midst of any kind of storm in life.”

Trent Bullock, pastor of First Baptist Church, Paris, noted that McSwain preached at his church recently on “Faith in the Storm.”

McSwain shared how God gave him peace in the midst of some difficult storms in his life, including his battle with cancer, Bullock said.

“I recommend pastors invite Mark to speak in their churches so that he can share his testimony to God’s grace and encourage those who are struggling with the storms of life.”

McSwain knows his decision to step down from the pastorate is totally a “step of faith” on his part.

“I am giving up a salary and benefits. I am trusting God to provide,” McSwain said. “It is both scary and exciting. I don’t know how He’s going to do that,” he added.

For more information about the ministry, including how to become a Journey Partner, or to purchase the book, contact McSwain at (731) 616-1482 or by e-mail at [email protected]. B&R
