CHARLOTTETOWN, Prince Edward Island, Canada (BP)–Perley MacNeill, president of the Canadian Convention of Southern Baptists, died Feb. 19. He was the second layman to be elected president in the convention’s 18-year history.

MacNeill, 60, suffered a massive heart attack after playing racquetball with a friend. He could not be resuscitated. His funeral will be held Sunday, Feb. 23, at his home church, Community Baptist Church in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

Before being elected convention president in July, MacNeill had served as vice president for one year.

Scott Plavnick, CCSB first vice president, served with MacNeill both as president and vice president. He now assumes the presidency for the remaining five months of MacNeill’s tenure.

Of his colleague and friend, Plavnick said, “Perley was a fine Christian man. Though he loved his dear Prince Edward Island, he truly had a heart for all of Canada. His passion was to see all people come to know the Jesus he loved so much.”

MacNeill was an educator who served as vice principal of a school in Charlottetown.
