NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)–Baptist Press is launching a new monthly feature today called “Christian Apps of the Month.” The feature will accompany a monthly technology column by Aaron Linne. Following are this month’s apps:

YouVersion.

PLATFORM: iPhone, iPad, Android, Blackberry, Palm web OS, Windows Phone 7.

PRICE: Free.

ABOUT IT: The YouVersion Bible app, developed by a multi-campus church known as LifeChurch.tv, includes multiple translations — such as KJV, NIV, NLT, ESV, HCSB and NASB — and allows users to search the Bible by keyword and to bookmark verses. It also allows users to post verses on Twitter or Facebook, and also to take notes directly on the app. It also includes dozens of Bible reading plans.

Olive Tree.

PRICE: Free, 99 cents, or more, depending on version.

ABOUT IT: The Olive Tree Bible app advertises itself as a way to “carry your Bible study library with you wherever you go.” It is intended for serious Bible study and can be personalized with hundreds of free and paid downloads. By itself, the app is mostly a Bible, but with the downloads, a user can study the Bible’s original languages, read commentaries and dictionaries, and view maps. Learn more at OliveTree.com.

ABOUT IT: Developed by LifeWay Christian Resources, the Read the Bible for Life app includes the complete HCSB (Holman Christian Standard Bible), allowing for reading without an Internet connection. Users can search the Bible for keywords. It also includes suggested plans for reading through the Bible in a year, and a sample of the book “Read the Bible for Life” by George Guthrie. The entire book can be purchased through the app for $9.99. Other in-app purchases also are available.

ESV Bible.

PLATFORM: iPhone, iPad, Android.

PRICE: Free.

ABOUT IT: The ESV Bible app includes the entire English Standard Version Bible and, once installed, does not require an Internet connection to read. Users can search the Bible and also can take notes and send verses to friends via Twitter, Facebook and email.
