Conference to include photographer of baby grasping surgeon’s finger

[1]

FORT WORTH, Texas (BP)–When a baby still in the womb grabbed a surgeon’s finger during in utero surgery on the baby’s mother, Michael Clancy captured the moment with his camera.

Clancy later told a reporter for The Tennessean that he didn’t know how anyone could be pro-choice after seeing the photo of the 21-week-old fetus.

The photograph, which was taken January 2000 at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn., will be the main topic Clancy discusses at the Photojournalism Conference at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary March 30-April 1.

Clancy had registered to attend the conference before being asked to speak.

In addition to Clancy, the conference will include featured speakers Charles Moore, whose landmark civil rights photographs were originally published in Life magazine, and Ake Lundberg, who for 13 years covered evangelist Billy Graham’s crusades worldwide.

Moore and Lundberg will be joined by other award-winning photographers at the conference to explore the deeper values and purposes of photographic communication, according to conference organizers.
