Cooperative Program giving at 0.66% over last year’s pace

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)–Year-to-date contributions through the Southern Baptist Convention’s Cooperative Program are up 0.66 percent compared to this same time frame in 2002, according to a news release from SBC Executive Committee President and Chief Executive Officer Morris H. Chapman.

As of Aug. 31, 2003, the year-to-date total of $169,049,210.96 for Cooperative Program (CP) Missions is $1,107,328.43 ahead of the $167,941,882.53 received at this same point last year. For the month, receipts of $16,728,108.69 were 4.66 percent, or $744,559.01, above the $15,983,549.68 received in August 2002.

Designated giving of $162,866,921.94 for the same year-to-date period is 2.46 percent, or $4,111,531.04, below gifts of $166,978,452.98 received at this point in 2002. The $4,999,738.03 in designated gifts received last month is $1,027,549.12 above the $3,972,188.91 of August 2002, a 25.87 percent increase.

For the SBC Cooperative Program Allocation Budget, the year-to-date total of $169,049,210.96 is 104.21 percent of the $162,215,535.13 budgeted, or $6,833,675.83 more to support Southern Baptist ministries globally and across North America.

The SBC operates on an Oct. 1-Sept. 30 fiscal year.

The Cooperative Program is Southern Baptists’ method of supporting missions and ministry efforts of state and regional conventions and the Southern Baptist Convention.

The Cooperative Program total includes receipts from individuals, churches, state conventions and fellowships for distribution according to the 2002-03 Cooperative Program Allocation Budget.

Designated contributions include the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions, the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering for North American Missions, Southern Baptist World Hunger Fund and other special gifts.

State and regional conventions retain a portion of church contributions to the Southern Baptist Convention Cooperative Program to support work in their respective areas and forward a percentage to Southern Baptist national and international causes. The percentage of distribution is at the discretion of each state or regional convention.
