Coppenger dismissed as president of Midwestern Seminary

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (BP)–Trustees of Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, meeting in a special called meeting Sept. 14, voted to dismiss President Mark Coppenger, effective immediately.
Trustees met Sept. 13 and 14 with the sole purpose of discussing the leadership of President Coppenger. They were in executive session for nearly nine hours Sept. 13, and for four hours Sept. 14. About noon Sept. 14, trustees opened the meeting, inviting in the media, at which time a vote was taken to dismiss the president.
Gary Peek, trustee from Pascagoula, Miss., made a motion “to dismiss President Mark Coppenger immediately.”
There was no discussion. The motion was seconded and a secret ballot was called for by trustee chairman Carl Weiser, a pastor from Lynchburg, Va. Weiser announced a few minutes later the motion had passed.
The trustees then went back into executive session, promising a statement later in the day, Sept. 14.
