‘Creation’ explores Darwin’s struggle

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)–A British film called “Creation,” now showing in select theaters in the United States, explores Charles Darwin’s struggle with faith in God and the turmoil that accompanied his development of the theory of evolution.

Paul Bettany, an atheist actor, portrays Darwin in the film, and his wife Jennifer Connelly, known for her role opposite Russell Crowe in “A Beautiful Mind,” portrays Darwin’s wife Emma, a devout believer.

A review of the film by USA Today said Creation shows Darwin wrestling with scientific exploration while plagued by despair over the death of his beloved 10-year-old daughter Annie.

“Darwin’s own loss of faith is a slow and fragile process like the raising of continents,” the review said. “The movie shows the scientist pleading with God to spare his ill daughter, bargaining to believe in Him forever if he lets his daughter live.”

Ken Ham, founder of the apologetics ministry Answers in Genesis and the Creation Museum near Cincinnati, said Bettany toured the museum last summer with a British writer for February’s issue of Vanity Fair.

“The movie biography may be rather boring to many, but what it does do is really portray the fact that Darwin’s ideas certainly undermined belief in God,” Ham wrote on his blog Jan. 24. “One quote in the movie, ‘You’ve killed God, sir,’ makes that very clear.

“Also portrayed is that belief in atheistic evolution would mean no love, no honor, only brute survival as Darwin explains to his daughter in part of the movie.

“This drama won’t be a blockbuster, though the secular humanists are really pushing for people to see it — and of course they do so because they want to promote anything that supports their atheistic philosophy and undermines Christianity,” Ham said. “I really doubt the movie will have a big run in the theaters.”
