ERLC, others join together to promote pro-life justices

WASHINGTON (BP)–The Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission has joined more than two dozen organizations in a campaign to reinvigorate the pro-life movement with the goal to have more pro-life justices on the U.S. Supreme Court.

The “Shake the Nation — Back to Life” campaign unfolded Sept. 4 with a television advertisement airing on network outlets in the Washington market. A letter-writing effort to the Senate and White House also was announced at a news conference the same day in the capital.

“Never before have so many pro-life groups joined together to coordinate our efforts to restore protection to children in our lifetime,” said Janet Folger, director of the Center for Reclaiming America, the chief sponsor of the campaign. These groups “want to protect children from all the brutal forms of abortion,” she said.

The ERLC “is pleased to be a part of this growing coalition of concerned Christians who are determined to restore full legal protections for the tiniest and most vulnerable humans among us — our unborn babies,” said ERLC President Richard Land in a statement released at the news conference.

“For too long our nation has languished in grief over the deaths of millions of aborted babies,” he said. “The only reason the disgrace of this legally sanctioned destruction of more than 1 million American babies continues each year is that Americans who are outraged by the slaughter of these babies have not joined together to bring it to an end. The killing must stop, and the Supreme Court is the key. Until the Supreme Court is committed to a pro-life position, our unborn babies will never receive the full legal protection they deserve.”

Other organizations in the coalition include Focus on the Family, Concerned Women for America, Family Research Council, American Family Association, Eagle Forum, Prison Fellowship, Lutherans for Life and Traditional Values Coalition.

The Center for Reclaiming America is an outreach of Coral Ridge Ministries, based in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

More than $2.2 million already has been spent on the campaign, Folger said. The coalition hopes to buy time in major media markets in addition to Washington.

Pro-life citizens may participate in the effort by accessing the campaign’s Internet site at www.shakethenation.org [3]. A contribution of at least $25 will provide for a letter and a baby rattle to be sent to each senator from a person’s state, as well as a letter to President Bush.

The president nominates justices to the high court, while the Senate confirms them.
