Evangelists to hear from Stetzer

SAN ANTONIO (BP)–Proclaiming the Gospel will be the theme for the Conference of Southern Baptist Evangelists June 8-10 as they emphasize the Apostle Paul’s exhortation in 2 Timothy 4:5 to “Do the Work of an Evangelist.”

Ed Stetzer, missiologist and senior director of the Center for Missional Research at the North American Mission Board, will be among the featured speakers at the evangelists’ annual retreat, Friday and Saturday, June 8-9, at the Marriott Plaza on South Alamo Street in San Antonio.

Stetzer is scheduled to become director of LifeWay Research on June 1 and also will serve as LifeWay Christian Resources’ missiologist in residence.

The annual Sunday morning worship service sponsored by the Conference of Southern Baptist Evangelists will be June 10 in the Lila Cockrell Theatre at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center from 8:45 until noon.

Featured speakers will include Phil Glisson of Memphis, Tenn., Randal Helms of Woodstock, Ga., and Sammy Tippit of San Antonio.

The retreat will feature Stetzer and other evangelism experts including Gary Hollingsworth, senior director of cultural evangelism at NAMB; N.S.R.K. Ravi, a former Hindu and director of the Evangelism Response Center at NAMB; Jay Johnston, director of FAITH/evangelism and discipleship at LifeWay; and Victor Benavides, associate for personal and event evangelism with NAMB and liaison to Southern Baptist evangelists.

“Because it is a retreat, I’ve asked Jamey Ragle, an evangelist who also does a comedy act, to be there as well because I want it to be kind of lively and not so heavy,” Benavides told Baptist Press. “We’re going to do the riverboat tour on the San Antonio River on Friday, and Jamey is going to bring about 30 minutes worth of laughter for us.

“I’m trying to make it real light for them this year but at the same time encourage them and let them know what other stuff is out there that they can use in their ministries,” Benavides said.

The retreat will conclude by noon Saturday so that the evangelists can participate in the annual Crossover evangelistic outreach preceding each year’s SBC annual meeting.

Inquiries about the retreat can be directed to Cathy Cumming at [email protected].

The Conference of Southern Baptist Evangelists’ annual business meeting will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday, June 11 at the Marriott Plaza.
