DURHAM, N.C. (BP)–A fourth walk across America by Ted Stone to combat drug abuse has been postponed after a Duke University physician recommended July 22 that he undergo major intestinal surgery.

The Southern Baptist anti-drug campaigner’s cross-country walk was scheduled to begin Aug. 12 at Atlantic Beach, N.C., and conclude just before Christmas in California. Stone’s drug abuse ministry will be continued by his co-worker Philip Barber while Stone recovers from surgery.

The surgery date has not yet been scheduled.

“This is just another of life’s challenges,” Stone said, “and I am confident this experience will only serve to honor our Lord in some remarkable way.

“I expect to be back on the road soon, and in the meantime, after a few weeks of recovery, I will continue to fill the pulpits of churches scheduled to be visited as a part of this latest cross-country mission and others in which opportunities are offered,” Stone, of Durham, N.C., said. “My life belongs to the Lord, and no mountain is too tall to climb with the help of God.”
