‘Fireproof’ opening in 85 more cities

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)–“Fireproof” will open in at least 85 more cities this weekend, boosted by its success at the theater in its first four weekends.

The Christian hit film surprised many mainstream movie observers by opening at No. 4 in its first weekend Sept. 26-28 — despite showing in fewer than 1,000 theaters — and has maintained that momentum ever since. In all four weekends, it has finished in the Top 5 on a per-theater average among all movies showing in at least 100 theaters.

This weekend, it will open in places like Monterey, Calif.; Monticello, Minn.; Mystic, Conn.; and Boaz, Ala.

Its opening-weekend success gave distributor Samuel Goldwyn Films the green light to spread it to other cities. It opened in 21 new theaters its second weekend, 59 new theaters its third weekend and 100 its fourth weekend.

After this weekend, Fireproof will have shown in 1,101 theaters.

The movie tells the story of how a firefighting captain played by Kirk Cameron works to save his failing marriage. It is the top fan-rated film at Fandango.com, a ticket-buying website. “The Love Dare,” a book featured in the movie,” has been No. 1 for two straight weeks on The New York Times’ paperback advice bestseller list. It is published by B&H Publishing Group.

Fireproof was made by Sherwood Pictures, which is owned by Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Ga. Sherwood Pictures also made the surprise 2006 football hit “Facing the Giants.”
