FIRST-PERSON: Baptist Press makes corrections to abuse-related stories, issues apology to those affected

[1]

On May 24, Baptist Press recommitted to Southern Baptists [2] that we will be a better Baptist Press in the days ahead.

Today (June 10), the editors of Baptist Press have made corrections to the story “Churches named by Greear in abuse report respond [3]” to better reflect the nature of the alleged sexual abuse of Debbie Vasquez.

In addition, the story “SNAP apologizes to SBC leaders, admits charges of ‘silence’ were ‘erroneous,’ [4]” originally posted on February 23, 2007, has been edited to include a note indicating we believe the story did not accurately represent the events surrounding the meeting between SBC Executive Committee officials and the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests and Clergy (SNAP) and does not meet our current journalistic standards.

We acknowledge and apologize for the hurt this has caused Debbie Vasquez, Christa Brown and the other members of SNAP over the past 15 years since it was first published.
