FMB names Lloyd Atkinson associate vice president

RICHMOND, Va. (BP)–Lloyd H. Atkinson, who directs efforts by the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board to appoint new missionaries, has been named associate vice president for mission personnel.

Atkinson, a former FMB missionary to Chile, will continue to direct the board’s personnel selection department.

In his new position, however, he also will help administer the day-to-day operations of the office of mission personnel. That office selects long-term career and associate missionaries, plus shorter-term mission personnel such as the International Service Corps and journeymen.

Atkinson and his wife, Sue, were missionaries to Chile from 1972- 77. He later joined the board staff as administrative assistant to the director for western South America, then worked with prospective missionaries as a candidate consultant in personnel selection from 1981- 86. He has been director of personnel selection since 1989.

A native of Miami, Atkinson graduated from Carson-Newman College, Jefferson City, Tenn., and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas. At the Institute of Religion in Houston he earned a certificate in clinical pastoral education.

In addition to his foreign missions service, he has been pastor of three Virginia churches.
