Former Executive Committee v.p. Tim Hedquist dies at 56

TAMPA, Fla. (BP)–Tim A. Hedquist, 56, former vice president for business and finance with the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee, died of a brain tumor Oct. 24 in Tampa, Fla., where he had been associate pastor of Idlewild Baptist Church since 1996.
Hedquist was on the Executive Committee staff from 1977 until January 1990 when he resigned to become assistant pastor for staff administration at Bellevue Baptist Church in suburban Memphis, Tenn.
Before joining Idlewild’s staff, Hedquist had been associate pastor and church administrator at First Baptist Church, Dallas, for five years.
“Tim Hedquist was one of the most skilled staff members I ever had,” said Harold C. Bennett, Executive Committee president and treasurer from 1979-92. “Besides being very efficient in his work with the Executive Committee, Tim had a strong commitment to Jesus Christ and the church. He had a broad understanding of Southern Baptist life and related well to Baptists across the nation. I enjoyed his sense of humor and his quick comments. Tim helped me greatly.”
In addition to his business and finance responsibilities, Hedquist was the Executive Committee’s manager for SBC annual meetings. He was recruited to the Executive Committee staff by Bennett’s predecessor, Porter W. Routh.
Prior to joining the Executive Committee staff, Hedquist had been minister of education at First Baptist Church, Nashville, Tenn., from 1974-77. After earning a master of religious education degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas, in 1965, he held church staff positions at Hyde Park Baptist Church, Austin, Texas; Travis Avenue Baptist Church, Fort Worth; and First Baptist Church, Lenior City, Tenn.
He was a native of Oakland, Calif., and a 1963 magna cum laude graduate of California State.
Hedquist is survived by his wife, Rita, two daughters, Jamye McCume of Memphis and Melinda Peck of Frankfort, Ky.; four grandchildren; and his mother, Lois, of Tampa.
Services are planned for 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, at Idlewild in Tampa and 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 30, at Bellevue in Memphis, with burial in Memphis
