Former Southeastern professor Alan Neely dies from illness

WAKE FOREST, N.C. (BP)–Former Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary professor Alan Neely died at his home on May 14 in Raleigh, N.C., after an extended respiratory illness. He was 74.

Neely became a member of the Southeastern faculty in 1976 after returning to North Carolina from Cali, Columbia, where he was a missionary teacher at the International Baptist Theological Seminary. Neely was a professor of missions at Southeastern until 1988, when he was named to the faculty of the Princeton Theological Seminary. He retired in 1996.

Neely was born Nov. 3, 1928 in Little Rock, Ark., and raised in Fort Worth, Texas. He graduated with a degree in English from Baylor University in Waco, Texas, and then earned a Ph.D. in philosophy of religion from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He also earned a Ph.D. in Latin American studies from The American University in Washington, D.C.

Neely served as a pastor in Texas, Virginia and Colorado. The Foreign Mission Board (now International Mission Board) appointed Neely and his wife, Virginia, as missionary teachers by in 1963. They taught at the International Baptist Theological Seminary from 1963-1976.

Neely is survived by his wife of 52 years, Virginia Garrett Neely; two daughters, Jennifer Neely Wilkins of Durham and Elizabeth Neely Forsythe of Creedmoor; and a son, Roger Alan Neely of Creedmoor.
