Ga. Baptists to sever ties with Mercer Univ.

COLUMBUS, Ga. (BP)—Messengers to the Georgia Baptist Convention voted Nov. 15 to sever ties with Mercer University.

The move was sparked by news of a campus organization describing itself as Mercer’s “GLBT Rights Student Organization.” Named the Mercer Triangle Symposium, the organization published the names of 29 supportive faculty and staff in the campus newspaper. The “gay-lesbian-bisexual-transgender” organization also held a “coming out day.”

A further, extended report on the convention action, during sessions in Columbus, Ga., will be published.
