NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)–Dan Spencer, pastor of the 3,500-member First Baptist Church in Thomasville, Ga., will be nominated for first vice president of the Southern Baptist Convention, a Florida Baptist has announced.

Spencer, 38, will be nominated for the post by John Hannigan, a member of The Church at Ponte Vedra and marketing manager at the Florida Baptist Witness newsjournal.

Spencer is the second announced nominee for the post. Mike Boyd, a former president of the Tennessee Baptist Convention and senior pastor of Knoxville’s Wallace Memorial Baptist Church, will be nominated for first vice president by current TBC President Roger Freeman, pastor of First Baptist Church in Clarksville.

The election is scheduled for the opening day of the June 21-22 SBC annual meeting in Nashville, Tenn.

“Dan is a sharp young man from a Southern Baptist tradition,” Hannigan said of Spencer. “He is a pastor committed to an understanding of what it means to be a Southern Baptist.”

Spencer is “a conservative, Bible-preaching pastor … [who] preaches verse-by-verse through Scripture,” Hannigan continued, noting that he also is a talented musician.

Spencer has led the Thomasville church to reach nearly 12 percent in giving through the Cooperative Program for Southern Baptist causes, Hannigan said, and to a Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions of $113,000 last year.

“His maternal great-grandfather was president of Union University in Jackson, Tenn. His father [Jerry Spencer] is a recognized pastor and evangelist who served as president of the 2001 Pastors’ Conference in New Orleans,” Hannigan said.

Before moving to Georgia, Spencer had led churches in Missouri and Alabama. A graduate of Hannibal-LaGrange College in Hannibal, Mo., he also holds a master of science degree from Troy State University in Alabama and a master of arts degree from Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary in Lynchburg, Va.

Spencer and his wife, Tresa, have two sons.
