KAILUA KONA, Hawaii (BP)–Messengers to the 57th annual session of the Hawaii Pacific Baptist Convention celebrated a new five-year partnership with the California Southern Baptist Convention, with its seven-year partnership with the Alabama Baptist State Convention drawing to a close this year.
The convention adopted a budget of $2,223,278 for the year 2000, which is slightly less than the current budget, by nearly $61,000.
The Cooperative Program portion of the budget calls for $887,989 in gifts from the Hawaii convention’s 100-plus churches, $26,214 less than this year’s budget. The percentage forwarded to the Southern Baptist Convention will remain at 31.5. The HPBC budget has no preferred items that are paid from Cooperative Program funds before the contribution to the Southern Baptist Convention is calculated.
The Nov. 11-12 sessions at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel, Kailua Kona, drew more than 275 messengers, while attendance at the evening sessions was near 400.
Following the Friday morning session, about 75 messengers distributed 2,000 “Jesus” videos to homes in the Kona community.
Steve Murphy, pastor of Olivet Baptist Church, Honolulu, George Iwahiro, a layman from Nuuanu Baptist Church, Honolulu, and Ted Goslen, pastor of First Baptist Church, Waimea, were re-elected unopposed as president, first vice president and second vice president, respectively. Hannah Miyachi, Olivet Baptist Church, Honolulu was elected recording secretary.
Messengers adopted a resolution opposing legalized gambling, in addition to customary resolutions of appreciation.
