Houston, in Top 25, opens hoops campaign

HOUSTON (BP)–Houston Baptist University opens up its 2001-2002 campaign on Tuesday evening in Sharp Gym, hosting Loyola University of New Orleans at 7:30 p.m. Head coach Ron Cottrell (202-127 overall) enters his 11th season at the helm for the Huskies, ranked No. 6 in the NAIA Top 25 and No. 2 by Street and Smith.

The Huskies, who set school records for the most wins and fewest losses with last season’s 31-5 finish, have a senior-laden club led by 6-8 NAIA All-American Charles Fordjour, the Red River Athletic Conference Player of the Year last season after averaging 15.6 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. He registered 21 double-doubles on the season, and is just 12 points shy of surpassing the 1,000-point plateau.
