International Day of Prayer for Vietnam slated May 6

[1]

RICHMOND, Va. (BP)–Southern Baptist workers with a heart for Vietnam are asking Christians worldwide to join in an International Day of Prayer for Vietnam May 6.

“This could truly result in strongholds being demolished so that the gospel could spread rapidly throughout the country of Vietnam and among the ethnic Vietnamese in Cambodia,” one worker said.

Of the 54 people groups that comprise Vietnam’s 78 million people, one group — the Kinh — has more than 23 million people who do not know Jesus.

The International Day of Prayer for Vietnam was planned last October during a meeting of Great Commission Christians who minister in the country. The representatives decided to designate the first Sunday in May each year to prayer for Vietnam, beginning with 2001. The date was chosen to coincide with the April 30 anniversary of the fall of Saigon to communist forces.

Using the lyrics of “Shine, Jesus, Shine” to guide prayer efforts, Christian workers ask for prayer directed toward Christians and non-believers in Vietnam.

“Pray that the Holy Spirit will blaze in the hearts of the believers in Vietnam and give them perseverance,” workers said. “Also pray that salvation will flow through the unreached people groups.”
