TOPEKA, Kan. (BP)–The monthly news journal of the Kansas-Nebraska Southern Baptist Convention ceased publication in December after serving Southern Baptists in the Midwest for 46 years.

Baptist Digest, with a circulation of 5,300, published its final edition on Dec. 23. The paper will be replaced by two new publications, according to Baptist Digest editor John Hopkins.

One publication will target pastors and other church leaders while the other publication will be lay-oriented with an emphasis on evangelism and missions.

Hopkins, who edited the Baptist Digest for 21 years, will lead an editorial committee that will publish “Heartland Leadership Journal.” The journal will begin publication in January, 2000.

Randy Cowling, a former newspaper editor and associational director of missions, will head the committee to publish “Images of the Heartland” quarterly.

Hopkins said the changes in publication were a result of a communications study.
