Ladies cook up fundraiser for displaced students

WAKE FOREST, N.C. (BP)–When Jackey Perry and Tara Jones in the admissions office at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary interacted with students temporarily relocating from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary after Hurricane Katrina, they always asked, “How can we help you?”

An answer the two administrative assistants hadn’t expected to hear: recipes.

Without recipes, the displaced students from New Orleans found it harder to make a new home. So Perry and Jones decided to do something about it, and the result is “A Little of This and A Little of That,” a cookbook filled with recipes by the women of the Wake Forest, N.C., seminary.

Originally, the cookbook was to contain a few recipes from different women who worked at Southeastern, but interest spread and the cookbook grew to more than 150 recipes in six sections.

“We thought it was going to be a small project, and then it exploded,” Perry said.

Cookbooks were given to all of the displaced student families, and all of the proceeds from the sales of the book will be used to help those students as well. The entire project is just one part of Operation G.R.A.C.E., Southeastern’s long-term commitment to help rebuild the Gulf Coast and its sister seminary in particular.

With the help of the campus’ copy center, Jones’ artistic abilities and a local printer, Perry and Jones were able to create a nicely-packaged cookbook at a reasonable $7.25 per copy.

“We were so amazed with how it all just fell into place,” Jones said.

Jones and Perry’s efforts have raised several hundred dollars, with a reprint of A Little of This and A Little of That expected to continue providing assistance for the transfer students.
