[1]HODGENVILLE, Ky. (BP)–During the next two years, an array of activities across the nation will mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln.
Kentucky hosted the inaugural event the morning of Feb. 12 at the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site near Hodgenville. Invited guests included President Bush, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne, Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear, author Doris Kearns Goodwin and actor Sam Waterston. The event is open to the public.
Prior to the inaugural, a Feb. 11 gala was held at the Kentucky Center for the Arts in Louisville. Among the scheduled presentations was a performance by Waterston, who has portrayed President Lincoln multiple times in his career.
On Feb. 9, First Baptist Church of Elizabethtown, Ky., hosted “Journey to Freedom: Performance of Negro Spirituals of the 19th Century” at Elizabethtown Christian Academy.
Campbellsville University’s Kentucky Heartland Institute on Public Policy will host a panel discussion titled “The Legacy of Abraham Lincoln: Relevancy for the 21st Century” Feb. 18 at 6:30 p.m. in the Student Union Building’s Little Auditorium.
